How to Detect Hidden Cameras
A hidden camera has to see you, stay powered and look ordinary. Those three constraints shrink the search dramatically — here is how to work them.
Think like the person installing it
Before you scan anything, narrow the search. A hidden camera is not placed at random. Whoever installs one has three hard constraints, and every one of them works in your favour.
It must see something worth seeing. That means an unobstructed view of the bed, the shower, the desk, the till or the doorway. Stand where you will actually be — sitting on the bed, at the mirror, in the shower — and look outward. Anything that cannot see you from there is not worth checking.
It must have power. Battery cameras exist, but they last hours to days, not months, and nobody wants to return to a room to swap batteries. So the realistic candidates are objects that are already plugged in or that sit inside something mains-powered: smoke detectors, alarm clocks, chargers, power strips, TVs and set-top boxes, air purifiers, lamps, speakers, routers.
It must look ordinary. A device that draws the eye defeats its own purpose. So it lives inside things that belong in the room and that nobody inspects — which is exactly the list above, plus vents, picture frames, wall clocks, tissue boxes, plants and mirrors.
Between those three constraints, a room that seems to have a hundred hiding places usually has about eight that matter. Find those eight and you have done most of the work.
Step one: the physical search
Do this before you open any app. Turn the main light on and work around the room in one direction so you do not lose your place.
- Look for small dark holes where a fitting has no reason to have one — a pinhole in a smoke detector faceplate, a dot in a speaker grille, a gap in a clock bezel.
- Check whether the object faces the bed. A smoke detector on the ceiling above the bed is a smoke detector. A smoke detector on the wall opposite the bed, at chest height, is not where smoke detectors go.
- Feel for warmth. A device recording continuously runs warm, and a plastic housing that is noticeably warmer than the wall around it is worth a second look.
- Follow cables. A wire going into an object that should not need one, or a USB cable disappearing behind furniture toward nothing, is one of the most reliable tells there is.
- Test mirrors, especially in bathrooms and dressing areas. Place a fingertip against the glass. On a normal mirror there is a visible gap between your finger and its reflection, because the reflective layer sits behind the glass. On a two-way mirror the finger and its reflection appear to touch. The full mirror test is imperfect on thin or coated glass, so treat a suspicious result as a reason to scan, not a conclusion.
Step two: the wireless scans
These are passive and cover the whole room at once, so run them while you are still unpacking. The Wi-Fi scanner lists devices sharing the local network, flagging manufacturers associated with camera hardware. The Bluetooth scanner lists what is broadcasting nearby and gives a signal strength you can walk toward.
Understand what a clean result means: almost nothing. Guest networks isolate clients, cameras can sit on a separate SSID or a cellular modem, and a device recording to an SD card has no radio at all. A wireless hit is strong evidence; a wireless miss is no evidence.
Step three: the lens sweep
Dim the room — curtains drawn, overheads off, not pitch black. Open the lens scan, hold the phone at eye height, and sweep slowly across every surface that faces where you will be. You are looking for a small, sharp, disproportionately bright point that stays lit as you move. That persistence across angles is the whole test: a real lens returns light back along the axis it came in on, so it holds; a flat reflection off a screw head vanishes the moment you step sideways.
Get close to the eight priority objects. Thirty centimetres, not three metres.
Step four: the infrared check, after dark
Wait until the room is genuinely dark and give it a minute — night-vision illuminators are triggered by darkness and some take a moment to engage. Then run the infrared scan, using your phone's front camera, which usually passes more near-infrared than the rear one. IR LEDs show up as a faint cluster of violet or washed-white dots where your eye sees only black plastic. Confirm anything you find is not a remote control or a motion sensor.
Step five: the magnetic check on your shortlist only
The magnetic field detector is the last step, not the first, because ordinary rooms are full of steel. Establish a baseline in the middle of the room, then trace the phone within a few centimetres of each object the earlier steps made you suspicious of. You want a sharp peak that rises and falls over one spot, in an object that has no reason to contain electronics.
If you actually find something
- Do not touch or dismantle it. You will destroy evidence and you may alert whoever installed it.
- Photograph it in place, including wide shots that establish where in the room it sits.
- Cover the lens with a towel or tape if you intend to stay in the room.
- Call local police and, separately, the property or platform. Do not rely on the property to report it for you.
- Leave if you can. Ask for a different room or accommodation. Do not negotiate with a host about it from inside the room.
Recording someone without consent in a place where they reasonably expect privacy is a crime in most jurisdictions. You are not overreacting by treating it as one.
