How to Check a Mirror for Two-Way Glass
Three tests, two of which are widely misunderstood. Here is what each one actually proves — and why a camera beside the mirror is more likely than a mirror you can see through.
How a two-way mirror actually works
A normal mirror is glass with an opaque reflective coating on the back. Nothing passes through it. A two-way mirror — more accurately a one-way mirror — has a much thinner, partially reflective coating that lets a fraction of light through. It behaves as a mirror only when one side is brightly lit and the other is dark. From the lit side you see a reflection; from the dark side you see through.
That dependence on a lighting differential is the key to every test below, and it is also why genuine two-way installations are much rarer than the internet suggests. They require a concealed dark space behind the glass and control over the lighting on both sides. That is construction work, not something slipped into a room during a turnover. A camera hidden in the frame or in a fitting beside a mirror is far more common than the mirror itself being see-through.
Test 1 — the fingernail test
The best known and the most useful, provided you understand what it measures. Press a fingertip or fingernail flat against the glass and look at the point of contact.
- Normal mirror: a visible gap separates your finger from its reflection, because the reflective layer sits behind the thickness of the glass. The gap is roughly the glass thickness — a few millimetres.
- Two-way mirror: the coating is on the front surface, so your finger and its reflection appear to touch directly with no gap.
Where it fails. The test measures where the coating sits, not whether light passes through. Front-surface mirrors exist for legitimate optical reasons, and some modern decorative mirrors use very thin glass where the gap is hard to see. In poor light you may not resolve the gap at all. Treat a "no gap" result as a reason to run the other tests, not as a verdict.
Test 2 — the light test
This one tests the actual property that matters. Make the room as dark as you can — lights off, curtains closed, screens covered. Then press the lens of a bright torch directly against the glass, cupping your other hand around it so no light spills back at you, and look closely past the beam.
Against a normal mirror you see nothing but your own light reflected back. Against a two-way mirror, enough light crosses the glass to reveal what is behind it, and you may see a space, a wall cavity or fittings. This is the most conclusive test available to you, because it directly reverses the lighting differential the mirror depends on.
Do it properly: darkness matters more than torch brightness, and pressing the torch flush against the glass matters more than either. Any gap lets reflected light swamp what you are trying to see.
Test 3 — the tap test
Knock gently on the glass with a knuckle. A mirror mounted flush against a solid wall gives a dull, dead thud. A mirror with an open space behind it gives a hollower, more resonant sound.
Where it fails. Plenty of ordinary mirrors are hung on brackets with an air gap behind them, and stud walls sound hollow regardless. This test is weak on its own and only useful as corroboration — but it costs two seconds.
What to do with a suspicious mirror
No single test is conclusive, so combine them and then bring the scans in. Run the lens scan slowly across the whole mirror surface and around the frame, from close range and from several angles — a lens behind partially reflective glass returns a weaker glint, so speed and distance both hurt you here. After dark, run the infrared check across the same surface; a night-vision camera behind the glass has to illuminate through it. Then trace the magnetic detector around the frame and mounting points, where a camera and its cabling would sit.
If a mirror fails the light test and shows a lens hit or a magnetic peak at the frame, stop testing and treat it as a finding: photograph it in place, do not dismantle it, leave the room and contact the police and the property separately. The full method guide covers what to do next in more detail.
One last note on proportion. Mirrors attract more anxiety than the evidence supports, and a bathroom mirror that passes all three tests is almost certainly just a mirror.
