The short answer

Yes, partly — and the honest version of that answer is more useful than either of the extremes you will read elsewhere. A phone is not a professional counter-surveillance instrument and cannot certify a room as clean. But it carries four sensors that each respond to a real physical property of a concealed camera, and used methodically they find the great majority of the consumer devices people actually encounter in hotels and rentals.

What genuinely works

The camera, for lens reflections

This is the strongest phone-based method and the one with the soundest basis. A lens is retroreflective: it returns a portion of incoming light straight back along the incoming axis. With your torch beside your camera you are lighting and viewing from nearly the same point, so a concealed lens gives a small, disproportionately bright glint that persists as you move — unlike a flat reflection, which slides away. The front camera, for infrared

Night-vision cameras illuminate the room with near-infrared. Phone image sensors are naturally sensitive to it, though the rear camera carries an IR cut filter that blocks most of it. Most consumer spy cameras stream over Wi-Fi, and a device on a network you have joined can be listed along with its manufacturer. The magnetometer, for concealed hardware

The compass sensor measures the local magnetic field precisely, and electronics distort it. Held within a few centimetres of an object, it can reveal hardware sealed inside a fitting where nothing is visible. What does not work, whatever an app claims

  • Detecting radio frequency directly. A phone cannot tune arbitrary frequencies. It can enumerate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices through the operating system's own interfaces, which is a completely different thing from the broadband RF sweep a dedicated detector performs. Any app describing itself as an "RF detector" on a stock phone is describing something it cannot do.
  • Seeing through walls or objects. No phone sensor images through solid material. Magnetic sensing responds to what is close to the surface, and that is the limit.
  • Thermal detection. Phones have no thermal camera. Warmth can only be checked by touch, which is a real technique but not a sensor one.
  • Telling you a room is clean. No scan can prove absence. A camera with no radio, no infrared, no visible aperture from your angle and no magnetic signature at the surface will pass every check. A clean sweep lowers the probability of a device; it never eliminates it.

Phone versus dedicated hardware

A purpose-built RF detector sweeps a wide frequency range and finds transmitters regardless of protocol, including analogue cameras and cellular-connected devices no phone scan will ever see.
