How to Detect Listening Devices
No lens, no infrared, almost no power draw. Audio bugs defeat the two strongest camera checks — so the sweep has to change shape.
Why a microphone is harder than a camera
Every technique in the camera guide leans on one of three things: a lens, an infrared illuminator, or a video-grade radio link. A listening device has none of them.
It has no lens, so the lens scan — the single most reliable camera check — is useless. It never needs to see in the dark, so there is no infrared to catch. And audio is a tiny fraction of video's bandwidth, so a bug can send its data in brief bursts, or store hours of it locally on a chip, or use a low-power radio that is silent most of the time. It can also be very small and hidden anywhere at all, because unlike a camera it does not need line of sight to anything. A microphone under a table works perfectly.
The honest framing: a phone-based sweep is meaningfully weaker against audio bugs than against cameras. It is still worth doing, and it still finds the common consumer devices, but you should calibrate your confidence accordingly.
What still works
Wireless enumeration
A bug that transmits live has to use some radio. Many consumer "spy audio recorders" and GSM-style listening devices are built cheaply on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth modules, which means the Wi-Fi scanner and Bluetooth scanner can list them. Unknown devices on a network in a space you control are a stronger signal here than anywhere else, because a home or office network should be fully accountable. Devices using a cellular connection, however, are invisible to both scans.
Magnetic detection
This becomes the primary sensor-based tool rather than the confirming one. Every recorder has a battery, a circuit board and often a magnet in its microphone assembly. The magnetic field detector can reveal one taped under a desk, behind a picture frame or inside a plug socket faceplate. As always, establish a baseline first, keep the phone within a few centimetres, and look for a sharp local peak rather than a high absolute number.
Physical search, which matters more here
With fewer sensors in play, looking carefully carries more of the load.
- Underneath surfaces: desks, tables, drawer bases, chair frames, the underside of shelves. These are the classic placements precisely because nobody looks there.
- Mains-powered fittings that could conceal something permanently: plug adapters, extension leads, USB chargers, plug-in air fresheners, lamp bases, smoke detectors.
- Objects that were given to you or recently appeared: a gift, a new desk ornament, a pen holder, a phone charger you did not buy. Provenance is a real signal.
- Small holes or mesh in places that do not need them. A microphone needs an acoustic path through the housing, so it will usually sit behind a fine hole or fabric.
- Loose fittings, fresh screw marks, disturbed paint or a socket faceplate that is not quite flush.
Behavioural signals
For a target of an audio bug, the strongest evidence is often not technical. If someone repeatedly knows things that were only said aloud in one room, that pattern is data. Test it deliberately: say something specific and false in that room, say it nowhere else, and see whether it comes back to you. It is a crude method and it works.
Be aware of the far more common alternative explanation, which is that the compromise is on a phone or laptop rather than in the room. Malware with microphone access is easier to install and much easier to buy than a physical bug. Before tearing a room apart, check installed profiles and app permissions on your devices, and consider that a shared account or a borrowed device is a simpler route for someone than planting hardware.
When to stop and call someone
If you have a concrete reason to believe you are being listened to — a stalking situation, a contested separation, a corporate matter with real stakes — a phone sweep is not the right tool and neither is any consumer app. A professional technical surveillance countermeasures sweep uses spectrum analysers, non-linear junction detectors and thermal imaging, and finds things no consumer method reaches.
