How to Find a Tracker or Camera in Your Car

The realistic device on a vehicle is a tracker, not a camera. That changes which scans matter and where you look.

Cars are tracked more often than they are filmed

If you suspect surveillance on a vehicle, the realistic device is a location tracker rather than a camera. A camera in a car needs a view, a power source and somewhere to store or send hours of footage, and the resulting device is bulky and easy to spot. A tracker needs none of that. It can be the size of a coin, run for months on a battery, stick to any steel surface with a magnet and report a position continuously.

So the search is mostly a search for something small, magnetic and hidden — which happens to suit two of the scans well, and rules the others out. The lens scan has little to do here, since there is rarely a lens. The Wi-Fi scanner has nothing to join. What matters is the Bluetooth scan and the magnetic detector, plus a physical search that is more thorough than most people expect.

Where trackers are actually placed

Someone attaching a tracker has seconds, usually in a car park, and needs a spot that is reachable without tools, holds a magnet, and shields the device from view but not from the sky. That narrows it dramatically.

  • Inside the rear bumper and the wheel arches. The most common exterior placement by a wide margin: reachable from a crouch, plenty of steel, out of sight.
  • Under the chassis, near the rear axle or the spare wheel well. Magnetic cases are designed for exactly this.
  • Behind the front and rear number plates and inside the fuel filler flap.
  • Under the seats, in the seat rails, and under the carpet or floor mats. Interior placements need access to the cabin, which narrows who could have done it.
  • In the boot trim, the spare wheel compartment and the parcel shelf supports.
  • Plugged into the OBD-II port under the dashboard near the steering column. This is a favourite because it draws permanent power and never needs a battery change. Look there early — it takes ten seconds and a plugged-in dongle you did not fit is unambiguous.
  • Wired into the fuse box or behind the dashboard trim, which requires more time and some knowledge, so it points to a garage visit or someone with sustained access.

The scan routine

  1. Check the OBD-II port first. Reach under the dashboard on the driver's side and feel for anything plugged in.
  2. Run a Bluetooth scan inside the car with the doors closed, and again standing at each corner outside. Many consumer trackers and item tags advertise over Bluetooth Low Energy, so they appear in the list. Note anything you cannot identify, then use the signal strength reading: walk slowly around the vehicle and watch which corner strengthens it. Give each position a few seconds, since BLE broadcasts intermittently.
  3. Sweep with the magnetic detector. This is the mode that finds a tracker with no active radio. Establish a baseline away from the car first — a vehicle is a large steel object and will read high everywhere — then trace within a few centimetres along the bumpers, the wheel arches, the sills and the boot trim. You are looking for a sharp local peak in a spot that is otherwise consistent, not a high number.
  4. Search physically with a torch and a mirror. Crouch at each corner and look up into the arches and behind the bumpers. Lift the boot floor and the spare wheel. Run a hand along the seat rails and under the carpet edges. Most found trackers are found this way, not by an app.

Unknown AirTag and tracker alerts

If your iPhone has warned you that an unknown tracker is moving with you, take it seriously — that alert only fires when a device has stayed with you across locations over time. Follow the alert's own instructions, which can play a sound on the device and, on supported tags, show you identifying information and disabling steps.

Two limits are worth knowing. Those alerts cover the tracker networks that participate in the shared detection standards, so a tracker from a vendor outside them may never trigger one. And the alert is deliberately delayed to avoid false alarms during ordinary shared journeys. A manual Bluetooth scan is what covers both gaps, which is why it is worth running even when your phone has said nothing.

If you find something

Do not throw it away and do not destroy it. A tracker is evidence of who placed it — it has a serial number and, in most cases, an account behind it that law enforcement can trace. Removing it and binning it discards the one thing that identifies the person responsible.

Photograph it in place before touching it, note exactly where it was, and take it to the police. If you believe you are being followed or are in immediate danger, drive to a police station or a busy public place rather than home. If a partner or ex-partner may be involved, contact a domestic abuse support service — vehicle tracking is a pattern they see constantly and they can advise on next steps far better than a technical guide can.
